Coverlets

A coverlet is a lightweight bed cover that you put on top of your bedding. Unlike thicker options, it doesn’t have a heavy filling inside, so it feels thinner and more breathable. It’s usually used either on its own in warmer weather or as an extra layer on top of your bed for both comfort and style.

The main difference comes down to thickness, filling, and how they’re used. A coverlet is thin, lightweight, and usually has little or no filling. A quilt is a slightly thicker bed covering with a stitched design and a light layer of filling inside for added warmth. A duvet is a thick insert that goes inside a removable cover. A comforter is a thick, filled blanket designed to be used on its own without a separate cover. Coverlets are typically used for layering or during warmer months, while quilts, duvets, and comforters are designed to provide more warmth.

A coverlet is mainly used to add a light layer without making the bed feel too warm. It’s a good option if you don’t want something heavy but still like having something over you. Many people also use coverlets for styling, such as folding them at the end of the bed or layering them over a duvet to add color or pattern. It’s an easy way to make a bed feel more styled without changing the whole setup.

Most coverlets are made from breathable materials like cotton or linen, which makes them feel lighter and more comfortable, especially in warmer weather. Some styles focus more on design, so you’ll also find woven, patterned, or slightly thicker fabrics depending on the look you want.

Start with the size: it should match your bed (single, queen, king), but keep in mind that coverlets are usually slightly smaller than bedspreads and don’t reach the floor. Then think about how you want to use it. If it’s mainly for everyday comfort, go for something soft and breathable. If it’s more for styling, you might focus more on texture, color, or pattern. Many people choose a mix of both so it looks good but still feels comfortable to use.
